Rainbow History Walk from Parliament Buildings

Rainbow Wellington members will join us on this 90-minute walk tour of inner city Wellington, New Zealand and learn about:

  • Homosexual Law Reform

  • LGBTI rainbow personalities

  • Churches and LGBTI rainbow communities

  • Imprisonment on Matiu Somes Island

  • A WW1 same-sex love story

Next tour:  1pm, Sunday 24 March 2019

Starts: Meet on the steps of Parliament buildings (on the forecourt by the flag poles)

Ends: Waterfront by Frank Kitts Park

Duration: 90 minutes

Cost / Bookings: free – no need to book. Just turn up, but please check the Facebook page for weather related cancellations.

Accessibility: Most of the walk is on the flat using accessible public footpaths, although there is a section where we will take the steps down from Parliament to the Terrace and then from The Terrace to Lambton Quay (an alternative route can be taken).

Areas covered: Parliament, The Terrace, Lambton Quay, Midland Park and the waterfront.

Rainbow Wellington  members are invited to join an exclusive Rainbow Wellington tour of Zealandia.

RW member and Zealandia guide Des Smith is hosting the tour. He says  there will be a little about homosexuality in the bird world  as well as an opportunity to learn about reforestation, our flora and fauna and a chance to see some of our rarer birds and Tuatara. Zealandia is  the first place Tuatara are back in the wild on the mainland after 800 years.
It will be a chance to increase the awareness of our natural environment.
The tour is a walking tour for two and a half hours, easy walking with some small up-hill sections. There is an option for lunch at the Zealandia Café at the end of the tour.
The tour will be on wet or fine
Zealandia is offering a very special price to Rainbow Wellington members $19.50 for adults and $16.50 for gold card holders, which you pay to Zealandia on the day.
 
There are only places for 20 people on the tour. Open to RW paid-up members on a first come first served basis.

We are combining with Waiguys for a potluck Lunch at Malcolm’s country estate near Greytown

The event is under cover so should proceed wet or fine.

What to bring:

  • A main, salad or dessert to share with others. There are barbecues, so you can cook meat if you wish.

  • Something to drink

  • Swimwear and Towel as if it is hot we can swim in the river

  • Sunscreen

How to get there:

  • By Train. There is a train departing Wellington at 9.55am arriving Woodside at 11.03am, return is 5.17pm from Woodside arriving Wellington 6.25pm ( if you have a Goldcard , you can use it on this service).

  • Tell us at Rainbowwellingtonevents@gmail.com if you are coming by train and we will arrange for you to be picked up and driven 5 minutes up the road to Malcolm’s.

  • By Car, We will also have a rainbow flag at the entrance.

To help make the most of the wonderful summer Rainbow Wellington invites you to a Pot-luck BBQ lunch in the Wairarapa on Saturday 17 February 2018.
One of our members, Malcolm Brodie, has graciously offered his country estate near Greytown as the venue.
To add to the experience you are invited to travel there by train departing Wellington at 09.55am arriving Woodside station at 11.02am. You will be met by motor and driven to Malcolm's nearby country residence. Return will be by train departing 5.18pm arriving Wellington 6.25pm. Super Goldcards can be used on this route.
For those less adventurous there is also the option to drive.We will give you directions.
Malcolm has a shaded dining area with chairs and tables.
Members of the new Waiguys group are also being invited.

What to bring
Food: please bring either meat/sausages or salad or a dessert.
Drinks: please bring your own wine/beer or soft drinks

Other

  • bathing costume, towel and old shoes/sandals to wear in the river ( as it is gravel under foot) - There is a good swimming area in the very clean and not too cold, Waiohine river on the property
  • Sun hat and sun screen
